What are wildfire

Interesting Facts and F.A.Q.

1. Lightning strikes the Earth over 100,000 times a day. Of these, 10-20% cause a fire.

2. Man-made causes such as arson or plain carelessness (like smoking in forested areas  or improperly extinguishing campfires) by individuals is the biggest cause of wildfires in the U.S.

3. More than four out of every five wildfires are caused by people.

4. An average of 1.2 million acres of U.S. woodland burn every year.

5. A large wildfire, or conflagration, is often capable of modifying the local weather conditions or producing “its own weather.”

6. Lodge pole pines and their closely related jack pines have cones that release their seeds only when they are opened by fire.

7. Naturally occurring fires, as well as controlled burns, clear out underbrush and help prevent even greater wildfires.

8.  Many animals in the food chain benefit when patches of forest are transformed by wildfires into clearings.

9. Forest fires move faster uphill than downhill! The steeper the slope, the faster the fire travels. If you live on a hill, you might want to leave your house if a wildfire is near.

How fast can wildfires travel

A wildfire can move at speeds of up to 14.27 miles per hour, depending on factors like weather conditions, fuel type, and terrain; however, strong winds can significantly increase the speed at which a fire spreads, making it potentially faster than a human can run.

Key points about wildfire speed:

Average speed: Most wildfires travel at a rate of around 6.7 miles per hour in forests and up to 14.27 miles per hour in grasslands.

Wind impact: Strong winds are the biggest factor influencing a wildfire’s speed, as they can carry embers and rapidly spread flames.

Terrain: Fires tend to move faster uphill due to rising heat.

Fuel type: Dry vegetation and brush burn faster than denser forests, leading to quicker fire spread.

Roofing and roof protection

Even Class A fire-rated asphalt shingles only provide a limited shield—mainly against surface flames, embers, or moderate heat. up to a maximum of 500°F. But in the case of a wildfire, where temperatures can reach 1,800°F to 2,200°F (980°C to 1,200°C):

  • The asphalt layer underneath will indeed start to melt, likely well before those peak temps.
  • Once the asphalt softens, it can drip, burn, or create flaming runoff, potentially igniting gutters, walls, or surrounding vegetation.
  • And while the fire rating test might account for embers and flame spread, sustained extreme heat from below or sideways (like in a wildfire racing uphill) is an entirely different beast.

This is why in wildfire-prone zones, materials like:

  • Slate
  • Clay or concrete tiles
  • Metal roofing
  • Or Class A systems with non-combustible underlayments
  • Fire Protection coating retardant as a fire block shield

are highly recommended.

Also, vent screens, ember-resistant barriers, and defensible space matter just as much.

Fire Protection Retardant Coating

Fire Protection Retardant Coating Paint works by releasing a gas that moistens flames and slows their spread. This gives people time to escape a building or put out the fire.

How it works:

Fire retardant coating makes materials less flammable and slows the spread of fire. It’s applied to a variety of surfaces in homes, businesses, and other buildings.

Fire Protection key facts

Cooling effect: When the retardant comes into contact with heat, it releases water vapor, which cools the surrounding fuel, slowing down the combustion process.

Oxygen deprivation: The coating can also create a barrier that reduces the amount of oxygen reaching the fire, further hindering its spread.

You should demand rockwool insulation

If you prioritize fire resistance, sound dampening, and slightly better insulation performance, choose Rockwool over fiberglass insulation or any other insulation – it’s all about Fire Protection and the safety of your family and valuable memories.

Key points to consider:

R-value: Rockwool generally has a higher R-value per inch compared to fiberglass or any other insulation, meaning it provides better thermal insulation.

Fire resistance: Rockwool is naturally fire-resistant due to its mineral composition, making it a better choice for areas where fire safety is crucial.

Sound dampening: Rockwool’s denser structure provides superior sound absorption compared to fiberglass or other insulation.

Cost: Fiberglass and other insulation are typically significantly cheaper than Rockwool.

ISO 14001 EMS

Understanding the importance of environmental conservation and management, it’s crucial to highlight the role of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and its certification. As a global standard, it provides a comprehensive framework that organization can fallow to build an effective environmental system

The seals represents performance

The seal is awarded to companies, products or people who demonstrably meet defined standards, for example in terms of safety, quality or sustainability. The DEKRA seal is a clear, transparent proof of performance from a neutral body.

The TÜV seal is an internationally coveted award that is intended to give potential customers the assurance that the respective product meets international safety standards, quality criteria and norms.
